Free photo tools on PicToolBox

Every tool below runs entirely in your browser. Previews are always free — the same 1-credit rule applies to full-size downloads.

How to remove shadows from a photo online free

Three steps, about ten seconds, and no software to install.

  1. Drop your photo in. Click the upload box or drag an image onto it. JPG, PNG and WEBP up to 25 MB are supported.
  2. Adjust the shadow strength. The tool reads the lighting across the whole frame and lifts the dark areas. Move the Shadow strength slider until the shadow is even, then use Shadow lift if the dark side still looks muddy.
  3. Download. Take a free watermarked preview, or spend 1 credit for the clean full-size file. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue.

Why this shadow remover works when a simple brightness slider does not

A brightness slider lifts the whole image, which is why it turns the bright side of a photo into a blown-out white mess. A real shadow is local: the window side of the frame is fine, the far side is two stops darker. Our shadow remover estimates the illumination across the entire frame, then applies a per-pixel gain so dark regions are lifted while bright regions stay put. The result is a photo that looks evenly lit instead of artificially brightened.

This is the same flat-field correction technique used to clean up scans and product photography, adapted to run instantly in your browser.

What it fixes — and what it does not

Shadow typeResult
Uneven window light, one dark side of a faceExcellent — this is the core case
Flash falloff, dark cornersExcellent
Large soft shadow cast on a wall or productGood — raise Shadow lift and strength
Hard shadow edge on the groundPartial — brightens it, does not invent texture under it
Shadow hiding a whole unlit objectNot recommended — no detail exists to recover
Because no image data is ever sent to a server, this tool cannot use cloud AI reconstruction. It is a fast, private, deterministic lighting correction — which is exactly what most shadow problems need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a shadow from a photo for free?
Drop your photo into the box at the top of this page, drag the Shadow strength slider until the dark area evens out, then download. The watermarked preview is completely free; a clean full-size file costs 1 credit, and new visitors get 3 credits free.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Every pixel is processed locally inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never transmitted, stored or seen by anyone — including us.
What do credits cost?
10 credits are $2.99, 40 credits are $7.99 and 120 credits are $16.99 — between 14 and 30 cents per download. There is no subscription required, and credits never expire.
Does it work on shadows from a flash or a window frame?
Yes. The tool estimates the lighting across the whole frame and lifts dark regions, so it handles window shadows, lamp shadows, flash falloff and harsh side lighting.
Can I remove a shadow from a photo on my phone?
Yes. The page is fully responsive and works in mobile Safari and Chrome. Tap the upload box, pick a photo from your camera roll, adjust and download.
Will removing the shadow make my photo look washed out?
No. The correction is a per-pixel gain, so it brightens dark regions without flattening the whole image. Use the Shadow lift and Saturation sliders to fine-tune.
